The walls were actually three stories tall before the start of the Civil War. Bombarbment reduced them to one story tall.

This was added during the early part of the 20th century for coastal defense.

The houses were stacked one right after another. The fronts had doors and windows. The backside had no doors or windows as it was not proper for woman to see men undressed (without a coat).

The Custom House

They had a dungeon where the likes of pirates (Steben Bonnet) and signers of the Declaration of Independence (John Rutledge) were held prisoner.

Boone Plantation

The miniseries "North and South" was filmed here. It is one of the only remaining working plantations (no more slaves).

Slave houses

The Boone Plantation made bricks so the slaves lived in brick houses. Pretty much all the bricks used in Charleston came from Boone Plantation (I paid attention on the tour).

They had extensive gardens developed during the mid 1800's. They exist pretty much as they were during the heyday of the plantation.

Audobon Swamp was developed by the plantation owner and was named after wildlife artist, James Audobon.
