Elvis
Dates of Trip: May 24 to 27, 2003
Summary
Over the Memorial Day Weekend I went on a trek to see
Graceland. I was scheduled to be in Dallas on the Tuesday after
Memorial Day so I went early and went off on a road trip to see the home of
the King. Due to my late afternoon arrival in Dallas, I was only able
to drive as far as Hope, Arkansas. Hope is the birthplace of President
Bill Clinton and not much else can be said about Hope. Oh wait there
is one more thing, IT IS A FREAKING DRY TOWN. I had to drive 10 miles
back to Fremont in order to get a beer. I really did not need a beer,
but it was the principle of the matter.
On Sunday I set off early and drove to Memphis. After
a brief stop in Little Rock to see the State Capitol building, I arrived at
Graceland around 11:00 am. Since I was traveling alone, I was able to
squeeze onto the next tour (everyone else had to wait 90 minutes).
Graceland is neat and seeing the Elvis memorabilia was quite memorable.
Heck I even entered Lisa Marie (OK the plane). I also visited Beale
Street and Sun Studios. I had lunch at B.B. Kings restaurant and watch
an old blues band play.
On my way back to Hope, I stopped at the Louisiana Purchase
Survey Launch Point. This is the site where the surveying of the
Louisiana Purchase commenced in 1817. It is now a swamp but they have
built a very nice wooded boardwalk out to the site.
On Monday I headed back to Dallas with stops in Washington,
Camden and El Dorado (Arkansas) as well as Shreveport, Louisiana .
Shreveport has built a number of casinos. One of which was nice enough
to give me some money!!! Thanks, Horseshoe!!!

Hotels
Holiday Inn Express - Hope, Arkansas
A very nice hotel. Clean, quite with a friendly staff.
If you are driving through Arkansas, this is a nice stop-over (just bring
your own bottle).
Points of Interest
-
Graceland
The home of Elvis. It is a tourist Mecca. I
recommend doing the Platinum tour as you not only get to see the house but
also the planes and cars of the King. Now if they only let you see the
toilet E died on...
-
Sun Studios
Sun Studios is the birthplace of Rock and Roll. From
this studio Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins recorded their memorable
hits.
-
Beale Street
Home of the Blues and birthplace of Rock and Roll.
While I was here at lunch time I would imagine it is quite the booming place
at night. Very similar to Bourbon Street in New Orleans and 6th Street
in Austin, TX.
-
Louisiana Purchase State Park
From this point the task of surveying the Louisiana Purchase
commenced in 1817. It is 20 miles off from I-30 but worth the drive.
The walk through the swamp and the Arkansas farm land is beautiful.
-
Horseshoe
Casino
Bossier City, La has about six casinos. I visited the
Horseshoe which was awesome. I was there only 10 minutes and paid for
my trip!!!
