Savannah New England Washington DC Liberty Bell Elvis Lewis and Clark Trail

New England

Date of Trip:  July 4 to 8, 2002

Summary

I have a degree in History with a specialty in American History.  I was feeling kind of stupid not having visited Boston the home of one of my favorite American families, the Adams.  Over the July 4th weekend I decided to visit Boston and the surrounding New England states (I needed to tick them off my list of visited states).  I arrived on July 4th and boy was it hot (almost 100 degrees and very humid).  I cooled off the next day a little (and I mean a little) but I still ventured off to explore the Freedom Trail.  This is the best way to see Boston and all of the historic sites.

While in Boston I rented a car and spent one day driving around New England.  I started early and traveled down to Providence, Rhode Island.  After visiting the state house and passing through Pawtucket, I went north up to Brattleboro, Vermont.  There was a fire in Canada and the smoke from the fire had settled in over the New England area.  It made for an eerie mood.  After passing through Lexington and Concord, I then headed east to New Hampshire and then on to Portsmouth, Maine.  I saw some beautiful scenery while on this drive.

On Sunday I ventured out again and went to visit the John Adams Birthplace in Quincy.  I also went down to Cape Cod to see where the Kennedy's play.  Traffic in and out of Cape Cod was horrendous.  I cannot speak more highly of the Adam National Historic Park.  The tour takes you to the birthplaces of both John and John Quincy (they are next to each other) and then on to the home John Adams lived in after he was President.  Charles Francis Adams built an impressive library to house the mountains of books John and John Quincy had collected.  In closing, contrary to popular rumor, I DID NOT TOUCH JOHN ADAMS' CANE.  No one saw it so no one can prove it and since they must not have captured it on video, it did not happen.

Hotel

  • Hilton Boston Logan Airport

As I was bound and determined not to drive in downtown Boston I decided to stay out by Logan Airport.  The Hilton Boston Logan Airport is an excellent airport hotel.  Shuttle service is available to both the subway stop, the airport and rental car facilities.  I was put on the Executive Floor which has a nice lounge.  I checked in on July 4th and was able to watch fireworks from the lounge.

Points of Interest

Adams National Historic Park

  • Located south of Boston in Quincy, the Adams National Historic Park entails the house John Adams was born in, the first house he owned (the birthplace of John Quincy) and the mansion they lived in after he was president (also the home of John Quincy, Charles Francis and Henry).  While on the tour you are shuttled between the sites via bus.  Get there early so you don't miss getting a ticket.

Freedom Trail Historic Park

  •  Start out on the trail early and take your time.  There is a lot to see and every stop is worth a little exploring.  Paul Revere's house is a must see as is the State House.

Minute Man National Historic Park

  • See where the shot heard round the world was fired.  These sites are teaming with history.
