Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded on December 17, 1817 as a sanitarium so that the residents of Mission Dolores could get away from the damp air of San Francisco. It became a Mission on October 19, 1822. Present day Mission San Rafael is located in the downtown area of San Rafael.
